Letter Hunt

We've been learning about the letter Ff, Hh and Dd this past couple of weeks. Today the children went on a letter hunt in the hallways to see how many Ff, Hh and Dd's we could find. We headed out into the hallways with out boards, papers, crayons and magnifying glasses to see what we could find.

This child finds the letter H on one of the lockers.

How many Hh's have you found?

This child is very proud of her work.

Using their eyes to find the letters on the locker name tags.

This child found the letters on other student's work in the hallway.

Good find!

This child uses a magnifying glass to make sure she doesn't miss a letter.

Our letter hunt was SO MUCH FUN! This is an activity you can easily do at home, in the car, even in the grocery store. Check your child's daily note to see what letters we are learning about in class and see how many they can find.
Another thing we LOVE about learning letters are the alphabet letter raps. Check out the
Letter Dd Rap, Ladybug Lane's favorite right now.

Fejevary Park/Putnam Trip

In October, we took a trip to the new Fejevary Park and Putnam Museum. We really enjoyed playing in the new park and we really loved the museum too! Here are some great photos from our trip. Enjoy!

One of our FAVORITE things about field trips... Riding the bus!

We explored what was left of the vegetable and herb gardens.

We found some tomatoes.

We stopped and smelled some mint!

Of course we had to take a picture with the big pig,

the bird house,

AND the butterfly chair!

We REALLY liked climbing the BIG rocks.

And pretending to be lions- RAWH!

The sandbox was VERY exciting.
If you dug deep enough you could find DINOSAUR FOSSILS!

She found one!

There was also a large pile of stick some children used to build a "tent."

We all had fun at the park!

After we played at the park, we ate some lunch, then played inside the Putnam Museum at their new Light, Sirens, Action! exhibit. Oh did we have fun!
Dressing up like firemen!

Driving the firetruck!

Riding in the firetruck!

BOOTS!

 You're under arrest!

They got him!

 Laying on the gurney!

Who let the dogs out?

The Ladybugs have been very interested in dogs. I asked the children what they wanted to learn about dogs and they decided they wanted to know more about how to take care of dogs when they are sick, what dogs look like, what they eat, what we can do with our dogs, what kind of dogs are there, what are the names of our dogs and how to take care of the dogs. After we added several books about dogs to our library the children began to notice that dogs can be big, small, short, tall, long and even "ginormous." They also found that dogs are a lot like us. They have 1 head, 2 eyes, 1 nose, 1 mouth, teeth, a tongue, 2 ears and 1 body.
This is a picture of the dog body parts we labeled on our Smart Board.
During this activity the children noticed a collar. We talked about why you need a collar and they decided it was for talking walks. The next day we added doggy stuff to our dramatic play area. You can see the children really enjoyed using these things.

After we read a book about veterinarians, or "animal doctors," several children enjoyed playing "vet" in dramatic play area. They used dog puppets and the doctor tools to check temperatures, give shots, and listen for heart beats. Some children used paper money and the cash register to pay the vet. We had to pay $1 for a shot!

Besides walking our dogs, another activity we like to do it play frisbee. The children found a frisbee and gave it a try on our play ground. Some of them use the frisbee to play catch other used it to play fetch.

Stay tuned for more doggy fun from Ladybug Lane!

Playing in the dirt!

With out curriculum out of the way and summer fastly approaching it's time to have some fun!
So what do you find when you play in the dirt? WORMS!
Our worm project all started when the garden in our outdoor classroom was planted. With kid sized shovels, hoes, rakes and a new digging area it wasn't long before we discovered worms.

The children had tons of questions so we talked about what we know and want to know about worms. So far we know this about worms...
  • worms can be BIG and small
  • they look like goo
  • are black, pink, gray, brown and red
  • feel soft
  • are slimy
  • wiggle
  • are in the dirt
Then we talked about what we want to know about worms or questions we had and this is what they came up with
  • Can they swim?
  • How do they wiggle?
  • What do they eat?
  • Do worms have body parts?
  • Why are they good for the garden?
  • How do worms eat?
The worm search has officially begun. Today we found over 14 worms which are now our classroom pets. We learned worms like dirt, moisture (which is "like water"), food and dark, cool places to live. They are good for the garden  because their slimy body has nitrogen in it ("a good stuff the dirt").

Digging for worms

This child is letting the worm "tickle" his hand.

Observing our new pet worms with magnifying glasses.

Much to my amazement, all of the children were more than willing to touch and have worms in their hands.

Our class favorites are the "baby worms"

Keep posted for more worms!
